Before you know it, the holiday season will be here! For most, the holiday season is a time of celebration. People spend time with loved ones, reflect on the past year, and set goals for the next year. The end of the year also signals the traditional time for annual performance reviews.  This can be a time for both praise and constructive criticism from our peers and those who lead us.

The cliché that people are their own worst critics is true. With that being said, put that cliche into practice! In order to conduct better performance reviews for your employees, you must first conduct a review of yourself.

Here are the four steps to do just that:

1. Check Your Attitude: Am I generally positive or negative in my interactions with others? What emotions and feelings dominate my mindset on a daily basis?

2. Be Reflective: Keep a journal of what you do well and what you can improve. Be honest as this is for you, not for publication.

3. Assess Your Performance Against the Job Specifications: When you look at what’s asked of you, do you get your work done on time and how well are you ACTUALLY doing your job?

4. Get Feedback From Others: What do your co-workers and supervisors have to say about you? What are your strengths and weaknesses from a third-party perspective?
